As I worked on both my written and teaching examination for ParaYoga© certification, I was continually asked “What is ParaYoga?”.
In this video I answer that question in general terms. Over the coming months I plan to help you get a better understanding of how it can help you on and off the yoga mat.
ParaYoga is unique to other modern styles of yoga in its emphasis on stability and steadiness in the body and mind, over physical movement. While a ParaYoga class does include dynamic asanas, or yoga postures, it also includes pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation, all of which are sequenced in a way that promotes stability. From this sound foundation, students are then given techniques to help them deepen their level of self-understanding.
The practice and study is designed to increase mental and physical stability in the practitioner so that they are less affected by life’s continually changing nature.
Ultimately, it allows the individual to cultivate discernment and take actions that are in line with their unique purpose in the world.
Because ParaYoga is steeped in the Tantric approach to yoga, priority is directed at building prana, or life force energy, and then using that energy to calm the mind and merge the individual with the universal.
It is not simply performed in the classroom or on the yoga mat, it is a holistic approach to one’s life and the way one serves the world.
